ORLANDO, Fla. —

Two popular tourist destinations for Massachusetts travelers announced they were re-imposing a mask mandate for indoor settings.

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, announced Thursday that face coverings would once again be required for all guests over the age of 2 while indoors and in Disney buses, monorail and Disney Skyliner, regardless of vaccination status.

The mandate includes inside all attractions, but face coverings remain optional in outdoor common areas.

The delta variant of the coronavirus is causing infection surges across the U.S., with Florida accounting for a fifth of the nation’s new cases last week, more than any other state, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hospitals have seen admissions soar with the vast majority of the patients unvaccinated.

A state law signed in May gives Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis the power to invalidate local emergency measures put in place during the pandemic, including mask mandates and limitations on business operations. It also bans any business or government entity from requiring proof of vaccination.

Nevada is re-imposing a mask mandate in places where COVID-19 is surging, which includes Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City and other locations.

The mandate means masks will be mandatory for all "employees, patrons, and guests" inside all of Las Vegas' casinos beginning Friday, regardless of a person's vaccination status.

Casinos must also post signage across their properties letting customers know where face masks are required.

The moves come less than 48 hours after the CDC recommended that even vaccinated people wear masks indoors in areas where the coronavirus is surging.
