In Thailand, all forms of gambling are illegal except the state-run lottery. The government is considering opening brick-and-mortar casinos for tourists. Singapore and Japan have already opened casinos. Around 60% of Thai population enjoy gambling. It was estimated that Thai gamblers wagered as much as $1.3 billion on the recent FIFA World Cup. 9,000 out of 10,644 gambers arrested in the last month were football bettors.

Thai authorities are fighting a losing battle against illegal gambling websites. The country's economic struggles post-Covid make legalising gambling a good idea. If the profits from the illegal operations are used to convince those with influence to keep the current system, it's not a problem.
