Why is Online Gambling Illegal in Thailand?
Thai government blocked 190 websites in contravention of Thai law in October 2020. Many of them were based overseas. Thailand is an exception to the rule that exists all over the world regarding online gambling.
Gambling is frowned upon in Buddhism. It's associated with crime, theft, drug use and other social problems. Many Thais consider it to be just as problematic as recreational drugs and alcohol.
Gambling is seen as entertainment in English-speaking countries. In the UK, people with gambling addiction can call helplines, use self-exclusions, and get help from charities. There are betting limits on interactive games and casinos/betting shops are trained to recognize gambling addictions and punish them. Gambling addicts in Thailand suffer more.
The United States is currently undergoing an online gambling revolution. The UK has a massive gambling industry built off the back of its horse racing industry. Thailand has no legal gambling history. People still have a negative attitude toward gambling.
Online gambling is illegal in Thailand. The government shutdowns have continued. Changes to the law take time and cultural changes take decades. i.e. it's not just about signing a few laws, it’s about making widespread cultural change.
