Committee Earmarks Bangkok for Thailand’s First Casino
The possibility of legal gambling in Thailand has gained traction after a government committee identified Bangkok as a site for the country’s first casino.
Committee recommends Bangkok for Thailand's first legal casino.
Committee has selected Bangkok as the first city for Thailand's first casino. The discussions involving the special government committee looking at casino sites are still in the early stages. The committee has to formalize their talks on gambling legalization before getting to casino approval stage.
Committee wants to introduce new rules on gambling in Thailand. It is a Buddhist country. The only legal forms of gambling are the state lottery and horse racing. Las Vegas Sands CEO Rob Goldstein announced earlier this month that his company may open a casino in a leading Asian country, which many observers believe to be Thailand, and the committee's proposal is in line with that.
Some commentators say that a legal market stands a better chance of success this time round as the Thai government under PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is more stable. The new King, Maha Vajiralongkorn, is not anti-gambling like his father.
