Urban One CEO Mum On Whether Casino Plans Imply Future In iGaming

Urban One CEO is mum on whether the new retail casino in Virginia will offer online gambling. Construction on the casino has been postponed pending approval from the Virginia Lottery. Alfred C. Liggins III said the project is going to offer what the current law allows. He did discuss his plans for a sportsbook and poker room at the Casino.
Richmond City Council approved putting the retail casino referendum on the November ballot. Liggins wants to delay construction on One Casino and Resort. If approved, it will be the fifth and final retail casinos authorized with last year's bill. Liggins addressed the RFP article in his comments to OPR.
The Virginia Lottery will have up to 12 months to issue a license once ONE has submitted its final application. The application will be submitted no later than December 15, 2021 assuming the referendum passes on November 2.
Urban One is applying for a traditional brick and mortar casino with slot machines, roulette, poker, blackjack and other approved games. If approved, it will also come with a sportsbook license.
The poker room at the ONE Casino + Resort will host tournaments. The design and branding of the poker rooms is being developed in the same way as the entire project.

Urban One CEO is very secretive about the plans for the One Casino and Resort in South Richmond. The casino, hotel and 15 local restaurants and bars will anchor the project. It will be surrounded by a 3,000-seat Rise Theater that will bring 200 live shows and 250,00 visitors annually. Live Nation will book the hottest acts. There will also be an onsite radio and TV studio and soundstage.
