Potential Second Chance for Failed Richmond Casino Plan
City Councilwoman Reva Trammell wants to have another referendum in an attempt to bring a casino to Richmond, Virginia.
Richmond City Councilwoman Reva Trammell is planning to submit a resolution on Monday calling for a second referendum on the Urban One casino project. If the resolution is approved, the matter will be subject to a public hearing. Senator Joe Morrissey wants to block the referendum for the next five years.
After the November election, Councilwoman Trammell started to get signatures to have another referendum on the proposed casino in her district. Urban One owns radio stations and a minority stake in MGM National Harbor casino. Petersburg officials are willing to enter into negotiations with Urban 1 regarding a potential collaboration.
The referendum in Richmond rejected the One Casino and Resort project. It was the final one out of five regarding the development of casinos in five Virginia cities. The plan was for the $565m One casino to open in October 2024. Residents in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Danville, and Bristol had already approved the casino projects.
