Slot machine regulation on hold following court ruling
Electronic Games Inc filed a lawsuit against the new slot machine regulations. The company argued that the regulations exceeded the authority of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and are therefore unconstitutional.
The government's plans to tax slot machines in Puerto Rico have been put on hold. The delay has been detrimental to the economy. The Gaming Commission will appeal the ruling. There are 101 licenced operators in the country. Before regulation there were 3,100 operators and more than 80,000 illegal slot machine machines. Now there are only 101 operators, and the law caps the number of slotmachine machines at 25,00.
