Maryland Casinos Hit Hard by COVID-19 as New Restrictions Cut into Profits
There is an increase of COVID-19 cases in the United States. Hospitals are overwhelmed and government officials have to close businesses or put restrictions in place to protect the people. In Maryland, a new surge in cases has caused tighter restrictions which has put a strain on the casinos operating in that state.
Maryland Casinos Hit Hard by COVID-19 as New Restrictions Cut into Profits. The six casinos operating in Maryland brought in $130.3 million in gross gaming revenue for November. This is a decline of 7.4% compared to the same month last year. MGM National Harbor was the biggest earner for the month, bringing in $55. 3%. Live! Casino came in second with earnings, $45 million. Hollywood, Ocean Downs and Rocky Gap Casino brought over $14 million each. Horseshoe Casino had to reimplement CO VID- 19 measures last month.
There are more cases of COVID-19 virus in the United States. Governor Larry Hogan ordered restaurants and bars to close at 10pm. The Horseshoe casino in Maryland was ordered to reduce capacity to 25%. The directive began on November 12. It played into the casino's revenue shortage. Until a solution is provided for the virus, it will be a while before any casino is able to see a huge turnaround in gaming revenues.
