Las Vegas weighing coronavirus hesitation
There are over 140 casinos in Las Vegas. The casinos were allowed to discard almost all of their coronavirus-related restrictions in May. However, the rise in the local coronavairus infection rate is being overshadowed by the presence of crowded venues, absent social distancing restraints and vaccine scepticism.
Las Vegas has seen double-digit increases in visitation numbers for the last four months. May's increase was 11.8% sequential boost to 2.9 million holidaymakers. The casinos along the world-famous Las Vegas Strip saw a 26.7% increase in gross gaming revenues.
Nevada has seen a rise in coronavirus cases in the past two weeks. The state has recorded 44 deaths in 14 days.
Nevada's chief biostatistician reports that the number of Nevadans being hospitalized with coronavirus has increased by 33%. The spike may be due to the full re-opening of the state’s casinos and the return of crowds and big events to Las Vegas Strip.
Nevada has only vaccinated 45% of its population aged 12 and over, which is below the nationwide average of 55%. Nevada has a lot of sceptics when it comes to vaccines.
Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak wants to increase the vaccination rate. He will seek help from the bespoke response teams being dispatched by the administration of President Joe Biden.
