A Powerball jackpot closing in on two billion dollars was up for grabs Wednesday night.

The numbers drawn were: 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 Powerball 10 with a Power Play of 2X.

Michigan players purchased more than 3.7 million tickets at retailers for a chance to win the second largest jackpot in lottery history, with nearly three million of those tickets bought today. Sales were strongest between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., when player purchases were averaging more than 320,000 tickets per hour.

If a lucky player wins tonight’s Powerball jackpot, it would be the second largest lottery jackpot ever won.

Tonight’s drawing was the 36th drawing since the Powerball jackpot was last won on July 19. One ticket purchased in California won the $1.08 billion jackpot. The jackpot was the largest Powerball jackpot won this year and the third largest jackpot in Powerball history. This is the first time that two consecutive jackpot runs have produced billion-dollar jackpots in the Powerball game.

During the current jackpot run, which began July 22, Michigan Lottery players have purchased more than 30 million tickets at retailers and have won more than $13 million in prizes, including six prizes of $1 million or more:

  • Aug. 26 – $1 million winning ticket was purchased at Wild Bills Tobacco Livonia III, located at 27424 6 Mile Road in Livonia.
  • Sept 11. – $1 million winning ticket was purchased at Kristi’s Pour House, located at 211 East Main Street in Hart.
  • Sept. 23 – $2 million winning ticket was purchased online at MichiganLottery.com.
  • Sept. 30 – $1 million winning ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven, located at 34951 Garfield Road in Fraser.
  • Oct. 2 – $1 million winning ticket was purchased at Purk’s Inc., located at 875 East Lincoln in Ionia.
  • Oct. 7 – $1 million winning ticket was purchased at Northview Wine Shoppe, located at 23015 21 Mile Road in Macomb.

The last Michigan player to win a Powerball jackpot was Cristy Davis, of Waterford. Davis won the game’s $70 million jackpot on Feb. 12, 2020.

The scarcity of Powerball jackpot winners reflects the game’s daunting odds of 1 in 292.2 million.

The $1.73 billion prize is for a sole winner who is paid through an annuity, with annual checks over 30 years. Most jackpot winners opt for cash, which would be an estimated $756.6 million.

Federal taxes eat into the winnings, and some states also tax big lottery prizes.

Powerball is played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
