Beginners luck proved true for a Redford woman who won a $100,000 prize her first time buying a Powerball ticket.

Latasha Robinson, 43, matched four white balls and the Powerball – 32-34-37-39-47, PB: 03 – in the August 14 drawing to win a $50,000 prize. Thanks to the Power Play, the prize was multiplied to $100,000. She bought her winning ticket at the BP gas station, located at 15180 Telegraph Road in Redford.

“I’ve never played Powerball, but my husband plays a lot, so I bought a ticket while I was at the store,” said Robinson. “The day after the drawing, my husband checked the ticket and started yelling, ‘We won! We won!’ I thought he was joking and that there was no way we’d won big the first time I bought a Powerball ticket. It was a surreal feeling when I looked the ticket over and saw that we really did win!”

Robinson recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim her big prize. With her winnings, she plans to buy a house.

Michigan Lottery players have a shot at a huge $725 million Powerball jackpot Saturday. The cash option for the jackpot is $345.7 million.

If Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is won, it would be the third largest Powerball jackpot won this year and the eighth largest Powerball jackpot ever won.

The Powerball jackpot was last won on July 19 when one ticket purchased in California won the $1.08 billion jackpot. The jackpot was the largest Powerball jackpot won this year and the third largest jackpot in Powerball history.

The last Michigan player to win a Powerball jackpot was Cristy Davis, of Waterford. Davis won the game’s $70 million jackpot on Feb. 12, 2020.

Players have plenty of time to purchase tickets for the drawing. Lottery retailers throughout the state are selling Powerball tickets until 9:45 p.m Saturday. Tickets also may be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com.

Powerball drawings take place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1.
