Camelot Under Fire Because of Instant-Win Games Focus
Members of Parliament are unhappy with the focus of the National Lottery operator Camelot on app-based games.
Politicians are unhappy with Camelot's focus on instant-win games. They believe paper slips are a better option as they require people to buy a lottery ticket in person. Camelots claims its focus has been on a more addictive model for six years. The UK Gambling Commission does not believe the app-based games pose any danger.
Camelot is generating record returns to good causes from ticket sales, record prize money to players and record payments in lottery duty to the Treasury.
Camelot has been criticized for its focus on online betting. Two-third of the sales growth for the last two years is thanks to instant-win games. Conservative Party member Andrew Stafford believes the National Lottery should be more responsible for clients. Carolyn Harris from the Welsh Labor Party is harsher and questions the fact that less of lottery proceeds are going to charity.
