What the Future Holds for B.C. Casinos
British Columbia's casinos were shut down on March 16, 2020. Regulators don't know if they will be able to reopen any time soon. The closure of the casinos has raised concerns among the industry's regulators and its fans.
The Crown is working with industry regulators, WorkSafeBC and the provincial health officer on the possible reopening date and working conditions. Stan Walt, owner of Chances Gaming in Kelowna, rearranged his casino venue and removed around 50 slot machines and 400 bingo seats. The dormant ventilation system was re-enabled. Mr. Walt hopes to welcome around 150 guests at a time with the new working condition.
Chances Kelowna has received permission to expand its table game offerings. Playtime Casino's rivals claim that such expansion would lead to market stealing from the Kelowana venue.
The proposed expansion of the table game offerings at the gambling venue had received major support before its approval by the Crown corporation in 2020. The City Council of Kelowna has also voiced its backing of increasing variety of table games.
