Taoiseach backs call for lotto regulator to be quizzed by TDs over lack of winners
Taoiseach backs call for lotto regulator to be quizzed by TDs over lack of winners. Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan raised in the Dáil the relentless rollovers. The last time the Lotto jackpot was won was on June 5 when an online player in Galway scooped €2,475,303. Since then the prize fund has climbed to more than €19million.
Taoiseach wants to refer the matter to the Finance Committee. He wants the regulator of the National Lottery to explain the 47 rollovers to date. Mr Durkan has written to Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath to express his concern. He has commissioned a report into the transparency of Lotto funding. The report was commissioned by the Minister. Last year ticket sales increased from €884.5m in 2019 to €918.9m last year. Online sales grew by 68.28% and now represent 14.8% of total sales. There hasn't been a winner of top prize in almost six months.
