Tamil Nadu constitutes 4-member committee to check the danger of online gambling menace
Chennai: In order to put an end to the online gambling menace, the Tamil Nadu government set up a four-member committee to assess the impact of online gambling on citizens. This comes in the wake of a number of suicides and major financial losses for people who were using such platforms to fuel their online gambling addiction.
The four-member committee headed by a former judge Justice Chandru will give its recommendations to the state government after studying online rummy and similar games where people can gamble online. The committee will give its recommendations to the Tamil Nadu government within two weeks.
Chief Minister MK Stalin took the decision to constitute the four-member committee after taking cognisance of the matter. He wants to know the impact of such online gambling platforms on the citizens in Tamil Nadu.
The committee will study in detail the commercials that promote these online gambling apps and also check the cases of monetary losses incurred by people who use these apps.
It is to be noted that gambling is not leal in India but some online gambling games have propped up and have their servers hosted outside the country’s boundaries in order to evade the law. Such apps also use social media platforms to promote their offerings and also give ‘discounts’ and ‘bonus coins’ etc to users so that they get hooked on to the online gambling racket which often results in major monetary losses to the user.
In the last one-year, multiple cases of suicides have been reported where the deceased had run huge debts while being hooked-on to the online gambling platforms like online rummy.
