Tamil Nadu government on Friday set up a four-member panel headed by retired Justice Chandru to provide recommendations for promulgating an ordinance against online gambling after a spate of suicides. Justice (Rtd) Chandru is a Dalit rights and human rights activist. He has disposed of 96,000 cases including the custodial death of a man based on which the movie 'Jai Bhim' was made, said a report on IANS.

The announcement to set up the panel came after a woman in Chennai killed herself after her husband lost their money in gambling. There was also a spate of suicides across the state by people who lost money in online rummy games.

The recent incident was the death of a 32-year-old woman Bhuvaneshwari at Nandambakkam, Chennai by suicide. The woman took the extreme step after her husband Suresh, who is unemployed, lost Rs 20,000 through gambling.

It's said that Bhuvaneshwari had kept the money to pay fees for her son who is studying in Class 9.

The police said, Suresh was unemployed and he recently got addicted to online rummy. Hence, he started taking money without the knowledge of Bhuvaneshwari to play the game.

Following this, Bhuvaneshwari confront Suresh about gambling and he soon admitted to playing online rummy. He also told her about the loss incurred due to the addiction.

Angered by the turn of events, Bhuvaneshwari entered into a fight with Suresh and later took her own life.

On June 5, another woman Bhavani (29) killed herself after losing over Rs 10 lakh of money in the online games in Manali.
