Paraguay's Senate passed a bill to protect minors from slot machines. The bill also stops the privatizing of the country's gambling regulator.
Municipalities to Authorize Slot Machine Operations. The bill prohibits slot machine operations at locations that are not gambling sites. The National Gambling Commission had delegated its powers over the authorization of slot machines to iCrop SA. i Crop was granted the right to authorize slot operations and collect the lion's share of the taxes from such operations.
Paraguay authorities are prosecuting eight people for their part in orchestrating the contract with iCrop SA and personally benefiting from the agreement. The regulator did not respond to two information requests related to the investigation. The new bill establishes sanctions for violations of the prohibition on slot machine operations at non-exclusively gambling locations.
