Mini-Casinos Appear To Be Thriving, With Three More To Come
Live! Pittsburgh's mini-casino made $9 million in September. Hollywood Casino York made about $6.7 million. The mini casinos' daily win per slot machine is among the highest in the commonwealth. Three more mini casino's are expected to open in Pennsylvania before the end of the year. They could produce a combined revenue approaching $500 million annually.
Pennsylvania authorized mini-casinos as a form of convenience gambling. The aim was to draw more revenue for the state. Live! Pittsburgh opened in vacant department store space at Westmoreland Mall last November and Hollywood Casino York at York Galleria in August. Hollywood casino Morgantown was built as new construction from the ground up. Two other mini casinos are awaiting final approval from Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board before beginning construction.
York venue managing well with fewer machines. Hollywood Casino York has 508 slot machines instead of the full complement of 750. In September, those slots earned average revenue of $348.65 each per day. Live! Pittsburgh was next highest in daily revenue per machine. It operates a Barstool-branded retail sportsbook in combination with an OTB race book anchored by a sports bar. It handled $1.5 million in wagers in September. The sportsbooks also made $178,538 in revenue. Parx Casino is the largest revenue generator in the state.
