About the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission
Authorized by the General Assembly, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission was formed as the State Lottery Agency by constitutional amendment in 1972.
The agency started operating on January 2, 1973 and, in April of that same year, began selling lottery tickets and distributing prizes. In October 2012, the organization underwent a change to its regulatory responsibilities for casinos in Maryland.
Lottery revenue is the fourth largest source of revenue for the state of Maryland, after income taxes, sales taxes, and corporate taxes. Approximately 60% of what the lottery earns from ticket sales goes back to players in the form of cash prizes.
