LVS, Tribe-Backed Groups in Florida Gambling Ballot Row
LVS, tribe-backed groups and Las Vegas Sands-backed group are in a legal battle over gambling expansion in Florida. The group backed by LVS has asked a judge to issue a restraining order against the tribe's groups. LVVS claims that the groups are using harassment and intimidation tactics to stop them from getting the signatures needed to place their initiative on the 2022 ballot.
The Florida gambling groups are involved in a turf war. LVS, FanDuel and DraftKings have spent $60m on the 2022 ballot campaign. Seminole-backed groups have employed shady methods to interfere with the ballot. They hired workers to intimidate petition gatherers and paid petition gathering firms excessive amounts to secure exclusivity agreements. 32 petition gatherers took buyouts from the Seminoles in the last two days.
Seminole Tribe's sports betting compact with the state was declared illegal last month. The tribe has been in legal limbo since then, continuing to offer sports bets for a while. An Appeals Court denied a temporary stay on the decision, so the tribe temporarily suspended operations on Saturday last week.
