Florida Casino Backers File Lawsuit Over Signature Count

Florida Voters in Charge wants to sway public opinion in favor of a gambling expansion proposal. The deadline for the signatures passed at 5 pm on Tuesday this week. FVC managed to gather 814,266 signatures, but it's 77,000 short of the minimum required by Florida law for a constitutional amendment. It filed a lawsuit in Leon County Circuit Court on Monday this Monday.
Florida Casino Backers File Lawsuit over Signature Count. If they fail to overturn the decision, all the money spent on their campaign for three new Vegas-style casinos in the state will amount to nothing. The lawsuit asks the Florida state to resume processing the petitions until all of the signatures in its in-basket are verified or rejected.
Seminole-backed political committee sued FVC for illegal conduct and fraud. FVC dropped the suit after two months of legal battles. The notice of dismissal did not include any reasons for the decision. The committee alleged F VC had “illegally obtained” signatures and that officials should deem them null and void.
