Gambling Commission Heads Facebook Lottery Shutdown
The UK Gambling Commission and UK law enforcement partnered with Facebook to shut down illegal lottery games on the social media platform.
The UK Gambling Commission shut down an illegal Facebook lottery. The commission worked with the Government Agency Intelligence Network and Facebook specialists to confirm and disrupt the unlicensed lotteries offered via the platform. Two people were identified as the promoters of the lottery and they were removed from associated groups on Facebook. The North East Regional Special Operations and South West Regional Organized Crime Units issued cease and desist letters to the groups involved. Unregulated lotters affect the vulnerable people of community and do not provide funding to good causes.
Facebook has shut down the Facebook lottery in the UK. Last year, Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit took on Facebook and both illegal lottery and bingo operations. Facebook deleted the entire account of the account that offered illegal lotteries in Netherlands. In November 2021, the KSA announced the removal of a group called Dordtse Queens on the social media site for offering illegal online bingos.
