Fruit-Machine Users to Have Their Age Verified through New Technology Aimed at Tackling Underage Gambling
Players of fruit machines will have to take a selfie to prove they are at least 18 years of age. The facial age-estimation technology is already being installed on thousands of betting machines in pubs, bars and service stations across the UK. More than 25% of schoolchildren have confirmed they have already bet on fruit machine. Venues' staff failed to stop about two-thirds of these teenagers.
Fruit-machine users will have their age verified by new age-verification software developed by Yoti. Regal Gaming Technologies supplies machines to various chains, including Greene King and Wetherspoons. Instagram plans to introduce the same software by the end of 2022. The age estimation technology has also been trialled by UK supermarkets at their self-checkout desks. It is intended to protect underage gamblers from accessing age restricted content or leisure activities.
