Escapee Tells of 300 Thai Sex Slaves in Myanmar Casino
Escapee claims there are 300 Thai women being held as sex slaves at a casino near the Thailand-Myanmar border. 25-year-old woman escaped with another woman from the casino in the northeastern Myanmar town of Myawaddy on April 10.
The unnamed woman and her accomplice escaped the casino and headed to the Thailand-Myanmar border. Burmese soldiers caught wind of their escape and chased them. Thai soldiers told them to swim across the Moie River. They were taken into safety by an anti-trafficking activist.
The Democratic Voice of Burma took to Twitter with a photo taken during the night of the river crossing. The independent news source stated the two women had plotted their escape with Ekapop, who is working to rescue the remaining hundreds of women still held at the casino.
There are reports of illegal casinos and brothels on the Thai-Burmese border. Thailand is considering opening a legal casino industry. A government committee has identified Bangkok as the ideal location for the country's first casino.
