Cops bust online gambling centre operating out of KL serviced apartment

KUALA LUMPUR: A online gambling call centre in a serviced apartment here has been busted, after operating for about two months, say police.

City police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm Habibi Majinji, when met at the scene in Old Klang Road, said five suspects were arrested during the 3pm raid on Friday (Feb 4).

"They operate an online gambling website, targeting players in Bangladesh. From what we can see, they have around RM40,000 in transactions per day.

"The suspects will be remanded and investigations are ongoing," he said.

SAC Habibi added that the police would be cross-referencing the suspects' travel documents with the Immigration Department.

"Their operation is slick. They rented an apartment unit on the 40th floor here so it would be hard to act," he said.

Each member is believed to have been paid around RM1,500 to RM2,000 monthly.

One of the suspects told The Star however, that he did not know that he was an operator for an online gambling syndicate.

"I was told this was a customer service job," he claimed.

On statistics for the Ops Dadu anti-gambling operation, he said police have conducted 110 raids between Jan 1 and Feb 3.

A total of 306 suspects have been arrested, with 156 charged in court.
