Casinos operated by the Navajo Nation have been hit with layoffs due to the pandemic.
The Coevid-19 virus has been affecting casinos in the United States for 10 months. The virus is so contagious that people are required to wear masks. In Arizona, the New Year started with layoffs at casinos operated by the Navajo Nation due to the issues surrounding the pandemic.
Navajo Nation has four casinos in New Mexico and Arizona. Business operations have been severely impacted and over 1,100 people were laid off temporarily. The tribe was provided almost $25 million from federal aid, but that money has now run out. If the casinos are not allowed to reopen, permanent closures may be imminent. The tribal leaders want to re-open as soon as possible. They invested $460 million in the venues. if the casino were to close, the local economy would lose hundreds of millions.
The situation that the Navajo Nation is facing is a common trend in the gaming industry across the United States. Operators are offering limited services based on capacity restrictions in their state or hoping to reopen due to continual closures as COVID-19 cases soar. The rollout of vaccinations has been slow going, so there will still be a need for masks and social distancing for some time.
