Belgium aims to completely ban gambling advertising by late 2022
Belgium is seeking to ban gambling advertising by late 2022. The new project intends to prohibit companies and platforms to advertise on television, radio, social media, posters on the street, in newspapers or via personalized email, mail and text messages.
Van Quickenborne's draft decree would ban gambling advertising in sports. Problem gamblers finance up to 40% of gambling companies' turnover. More than 2 billion euros was spent on gambling in 2019. Online gambling increased by 43% during the COVID-19 pandemic. The draft has been approved by the six competent ministers, but it has not been greenlit by EU. It needs to be approved and given a positive opinion by Council of State before it can enter into force. The proposal is not yet approved. i.e. it needs approval from the Council.
