Belgium to Cut Weekly Gambling Deposit Limits By 60%
Draft Royal Decree is expected to cut weekly gambling deposit limits by 60%. Online gamblers in Belgium would only be able to deposit €200 per week per website.
Weekly limit from €500 to €200. Online gamblers in Belgium could theoretically deposit more money per week under the new limit. The current €5,000 limit is on all gaming websites combined. If the draft Royal Decree gets the approval of the Belgian Council of State and the Data Protection Authority, it will become law.
The current €500 gambling deposit limit was put in place in April 2020 to protect consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was intended to remain in effect until pandemics were lifted, but the limit remains.
Belgium has strict gambling laws. It banned loot boxes in video games in April 2018. EA refused to remove loot box from its games. In January 2019, EA conceded and removed the ability to pay for lootboxes. Loot boxes can be earned through normal play and can also be bought with real money. The least problematic lootbox types are those that are earned solely through gameplay and contain only cosmetic items.
