TV gambling ads during the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar fell by more than a quarter to the levels registered in the previous World Cups.

There were 110 gambling ads on ITV during the World Cup games from the group stage. This is a decrease of 34% from 167 ads aired on the channel during previous World Cups. The BGC believes the decrease is due to the whistle-to-whistle ban introduced in 2019. The ban prevents betting ads from airing from 5 minutes before a match kickoff until 5 mins after the match ends. Last year, the report found that the ban reduced the number of such ads being seen by children by 97%.

The black market is unsafe and does not contribute to the economy. The regulated market supports jobs, generates billions in tax money and supports horse racing and sports. The gambling industry body in the UK collaborated with the world’s biggest social media sites to introduce new age-gating rules that will prevent under 25s from seeing betting adverts for most of the sites.
