Territorians await Powerball draw as jackpot surges to all-time high $160 million
With the Berrimah postcode in the Territory widely considered among the luckiest places when it comes to buying a winning lottery ticket, Territorians will have the chance to snare the largest lottery prize in the country’s history for the first time Thursday.
This Thursday’s Powerball draw is offering a whopping $160 million jackpot. No Territorian has yet to win a jackpot in Powerball division one, while more than $1 billion in lottery prizes have already been won since 2021.
The $160 million Powerball draw has the biggest prize ever offered by an Australian lottery game. The jackpot has soared upward after there were no division one winners during the past five Powerball draws.
The Lott spokesman Matt Hart said he anticipates that up to half of Australian adults will have an entry in the upcoming draw.
“While Australian lotteries have been operating for more than a century, there have only been nine draws that have offered a jackpot of $100 million or more, and this Thursday’s draw is the biggest of the lot,” Mr Hart said.
He said that if a single person takes home this $160 million prize on Thursday night, the individual will be making history by becoming the nation’s biggest-ever individual lottery winner.
“While we’ve never had a $160 million Powerball draw before, if previous big jackpots are anything to go by, we can expect it to get busier and busier at lottery outlets and online leading up to Thursday night’s draw,” he said.
“We encourage customers to not only get in early to purchase their entries but also register their entries to a player card or online account so we can contact them directly after the draw with some incredible news.”
More than 133.5 million winners took home more than $3.93 billion in prize money from The Lott in the 2022 financial year from their favourite games including Saturday Lotto, Monday & Wednesday Lotto, Powerball, Oz Lotto, Set for Life, Lucky Lotteries, Keno, Super 66, Lotto Strike and Instant Scratch-Its.
Australia’s official lotteries donated more than $1.6 billion through state lottery taxes and donations to aid community programs, such as hospitals, health research, disaster relief and education in the last financial year.
