Tamil Nadu: 31-year-old man hangs self, family blames online gambling addiction
A 31-year-old man died by suicide in Tamil Nadu after his family questioned him about his online gambling addiction and the money lost due to it.
The deceased, identified as Anandan, was a resident of Kattukollai village. Anandan acquired a job in a tech firm in Chennai six months ago and was earning Rs 13,000 per month.
His family alleged that Anandan became addicted to online gambling and didn't send any money home. Anandan had apparently lost more than Rs 5 lakh in online gambling.
Anandan had visited his home two days back to cast his vote in the local body elections. He had allegedly asked for money from his parents to return to Chennai, which is when he was confronted by his relatives over his gambling addiction and questioned why he didn't give any money to his family.
His family had then left to work in the agricultural fields. When they returned, they were shocked to find Anandan hanging from a ceiling fan.
Sudhakar, brother of Anandan, said that they belonged to a poor background and took a loan to make Anandan study ME and was shocked to see what Anandan had done.
"He never gave any money at home. He had been playing online gambling for nearly 3 years. Whatever his mother earned from MNREGA, he had used it in online gambling without telling her. He even took my salary once without my knowledge, using a mobile payment, and I only came to know of it later. All we wanted was him to have a good life", said Sudhakar.
Vaniyambadi Police were informed, who retrieved the body and sent it to Vaniyambadi Government Hospital for autopsy. Further investigation is underway.
Anandan's family has also raised questions over why online gambling has not yet been banned, even after it has caused havoc in many families.
