Powerball jackpot rises to $620 million; million-dollar Brooklyn ticket hits for second-place winner
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The stakes are higher.
After Wednesday night’s non-winning Powerball drawing (02, 07, 11, 17, 32, 11*), the massive jackpot has ballooned to $620 million. The lump sum is $446 million, and the drawing will take place Saturday night.
Despite the grand prize not hitting for any ticket holders, a $1 million ticket was sold in Brooklyn, according to the New York Lottery, via reports.
The ticket was purchased at Foster Island Corporation at 9702 Foster Ave., said ABC7.
Staten Island has been home to several lottery winners.
One of the largest wins for the borough involved Nandlall Mangal, who came forward at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens, to claim the $245.6 million jackpot from the August 2018 Powerball drawing. Mangal, who only plays when the jackpot climbs over $100 million, purchased the winning lottery ticket from the Stop & Shop in New Dorp, according to Advance archives.
Three years earlier, Sunnyside plumber Anthony Perosi dropped two bucks on a $136 million Powerball ticket: “I tried to breathe in and nothing would go in,” Perosi said of the moment he realized he had won. “I felt like I was having a heart attack.”
As for smaller — but still noteworthy — fortunes, in June, one lucky winner purchased a Take-5 winning lottery ticket worth $28,435 on Staten Island. The winning ticket was sold at Homeport Liquors & Fine Wines at 80 Canal St. in Stapleton.
A month prior to that, Stop & Shop in Port Richmond sold a $32,000 Take 5 lottery ticket — whose store manager “Lucky Larry” DiAntonio sold four winning lottery tickets in the last three years. Each win took place at a different Stop & Shop location on Staten Island.
And in April, one winning Take 5 ticket was sold on Staten Island worth $33,203. The winning ticket was sold at Forest Cards & Gifts in West Brighton.
