NCCT ask Indonesia to share online gambling info
The National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT) requested the Indonesian authorities to share their experiences and information related to the discovery of illegal online gambling sites in Cambodia.
“We asked the Indonesian authorities to share their experiences, information, and locations of illegal online gambling in Cambodia,” Chou Bun Eng, a secretary of state of the Ministry of Interior and vice-chairwoman of the NCCT, said yesterday.
“Cambodia is not a hiding place for illegal online crimes. Cambodian authorities are working to combat illegal online gambling, human trafficking, cyber fraud, illegal detention and other crimes,” she said.
“The Cambodian government also does not want to see all these crimes happen in its territory and we are doing a lot of work with relevant partners and foreign authorities in many countries,” she said.
The Cambodian authorities have in the past cooperated with their Indonesian counterparts in rescuing their citizens, but neither side has ever shared their experiences or information in depth with each other, Bun Eng said.
If Indonesia or other countries find effective ways to crack down on illegal online gambling, they should share their technical knowledge or ask for cooperation with Cambodia to strengthen the relationship in cracking down on crime, she said.
Cambodia cannot effectively do all this work alone, it needs the support and cooperation of partner countries and countries whose nationals become victims in Cambodia, she said.
Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, has said that servers for online gambling sites are based in Cambodia and the Philippines, where such gambling activities are illegal.
Even though the locations have been discovered, the Ministry continues its efforts to block gambling-related websites as the internet protocol or IP address keeps changing.
Measures taken to tackle such illegal activities in the country included terminating access to gambling websites and blocking bank accounts linked to gambling.
The ministry also collaborated with mobile operators to monitor numbers used to promote gambling.
