Latest Casino Name Change: Just Call It Mohegan Pennsylvania
The racetrack-casino formerly known as Mohegan Sun Pocono and even Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs before that is now going with a pithier name: Mohegan Pennsylvania.
The change was announced Monday by Mohegan, the Connecticut-based tribal gaming entity that itself shortened its name earlier this year from Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment.
“Many of our partners, stakeholders, and valued guests commonly refer to our brand as ‘Mohegan,’ so the new title is a strategic decision that truly encapsulates our capabilities and values,” Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault said in the announcement. “To also create synergy across the Mohegan portfolio, especially as we continue to grow in-line with the Mohegan Tribe’s vision, destinations like Mohegan Pennsylvania have also rolled out a rebrand.”
Mohegan Pennsylvania, which was the state’s first casino to open in 2006, is nearing completion of a $10 million renovation of its 237-room hotel. Located near Wilkes-Barre, the casino has more than 1,700 slot machines and nearly 60 live table games adjacent to a harness track with live racing currently taking place three days a week.
The latest revenue report from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, covering September results, showed Mohegan fourth in slots revenue among the state’s 16 casinos with $15.7 million earned. It was 11 in table games revenue with $2.1 million.
The property also has a retail sportsbook, which took $1.2 million in bets last month with revenue of $252,472. Its online sports betting partner is Unibet, which had September handle of $6.1 million and gross revenue of $331,113.
Mohegan is the second casino in the state to undergo rebranding in the past year. PENN Entertainment adopted Hollywood Casino at The Meadows as the new name of its casino in Washington County, formerly Meadows Racetrack & Casino.
