What a Kalamazoo County man thought was an $8 Powerball win turned out to be a $500,000 prize thanks to the Double Play drawing.

Bruce Wall, 58, matched the five white balls – 43-51-53-63-68 – in the Dec. 29, 2021, Powerball Double Play drawing to win a $500,000 prize. He bought his winning ticket at the Augusta Shell gas station, located at 101 East Michigan Avenue in Augusta. Augusta is about 10 miles west of Battle Creek.

“I saw that I had matched the Powerball of 11 in the regular drawing, so I figured I had an $8 winner since I added the Powerplay option to my ticket,” said Wall. “When I scanned the ticket, I got a message that said I needed to file a claim.

“At first, I was confused, but then it hit me that I had added Double Play to my ticket. When I checked those numbers and saw I had matched five, I started shaking and couldn’t stop!”

Wall visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans to invest and enjoy a more comfortable retirement.

“Winning means I am going to be debt free, and I couldn’t feel more grateful or blessed,” Wall said.

The Powerball jackpot was last won on Jan. 5. Two winning tickets were bought in California and Wisconsin, respectively, and split a $632.6 million jackpot. The current jackpot stands at $82 million.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
