Hard Rock Joins Race for New York City Casino License
Hard Rock International wants to apply for a casino license in New York City. The company's chairman Jim Allen made the announcement in Atlantic City on Wednesday. Other operators interested in the licenses include Genting, MGM Resorts International, Wynn Resort, Caesars Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands, and Bally’s Corporation.
New York City has a large population and wealth. New York residents voted in 2013 to allow seven non-tribal casinos in the state. Upstate New Yorkers have four casinos. In New Jersey, there are two casinos: Empire City Casino and Resorts World New Yorker.
Hard Rock is planning to build a new casino resort in northern New Jersey at the Meadowlands Racetrack. The company has had plans for the development since 2015. It needs to get permission from New York City before it can proceed with the project. New NewJersey state Assemblyman Ralph Caputo doubts the two Hard Rock projects will be successful.
