Florida Supreme Court Might Decide Fate of State's Casino Industry
Florida lawmakers are having a difficult time expanding the state's casino market. The state’s attorney general wants the Florida Supreme Court to review a measure that could lead to new casinos in North Florida.
Florida voters approved a ballot measure in 2018 that gave them sole control over the introduction of new casinos in the state. Attorney General Ashley Moody requested the Florida Supreme Court to review a proposal for a constitutional amendment. It would allow North Florida to offer Las Vegas-style gambling. Existing casinos could offer traditional casino gaming. Las Las Sands backs the proposal.
LVS has pledged $27 million to fund the proposal to expand casino gaming in Florida. The proposal is opposed by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which controls all casino-style betting in the state. 15 Florida gaming properties generate more than $3 billion annually in gambling wins. Majority of the revenue is generated by seven Seminoles casinos.
