DG MARTIN COLUMN: Lottery or bitcoin
In 2005, the North Carolina legislature established a lottery. Today the lottery takes in billions of dollars each year. About 65 percent of the total goes to pay for prizes, 7 percent goes for retailers who sell the tickets to individuals, 4 percent covers administrative costs and the expenses for an advertising program. The remaining 25 percent is used to help fund public schools. Bitcoin is an investment. Its value will either go up or down, making a 50 percent chance of winning or losing. It's not as good as a Lottery ticket. Government should encourage its citizens to save and spend money for important expenses.
