Bank Denies Casino Check Racial Discrimination Claims
Fifth Third Bank denies allegations that its employees racially discriminated against a black woman trying to cash a casino check.
Lizzie Pugh, 71, won a five-figure jackpot playing a slot machine at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. She visited the property with a church group. P Hugh decided to pay the taxes on the winnings and receive the rest in the form of a check. Fifth Third Bank refused to cash the check, which she filed a federal lawsuit against.
Pugh won money at a casino and tried to deposit it with her bank. Three white employees at Fifth Third Bank deemed the check fraudulent. She eventually recollected the money and deposited it in Chase bank the same day.
Fifth Third Bank denies the lawsuit's allegations. Pugh's lawyer is Deborah Gordon, who handled a similar case in 2020. She sued a bank after it refused to cash her client's settlement check. The bank issued an apology and settled the case privately.
