Another Record for Internet Gaming in New Jersey Market
The first month of 2020 was a good one for all of New Jersey gaming. From slot machines in land-based casinos to sports wagering and online poker, every form of gambling showed positive numbers in January.
The first report of the year from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement noted $300.7 million in total gaming revenue for the month of January. This was a 30.9% increase over the first month of 2019. Of course, sports wagering was up by the most drastic percent of 185.2%, as it was just getting started last year, but internet gaming showed the second-greatest increase of 64%.
If the trend keeps up as 2020 progresses, this could be an entire year for the record books.

January 2020 Online Poker Revenue
For the second month in a row, the online poker numbers increased from the previous month. It is good news from an otherwise downswing-filled sector of the internet gaming industry in New Jersey.
Even so, the year-on-year decreases continued. Since last year was the worst to date for online poker revenue, it doesn’t bode well that the yearly numbers are still down.
–January 2020 online poker win: $1,832,211
–December 2019 online poker win: $1,734,814
–January 2019 online poker win: $1,882,890
—Month-on-month: 5.6% increase
—Year-on-year: 2.7% decrease
January 2020 Online Casino Games Revenue
The new year differs only from the last one in that the revenue from online casino games – slots and table games – is higher and higher. The January 2020 number set another monthly record.
The year-on-year growth also remained significant. The online casino sites continue to amaze and show no signs of finding a plateau. Growth rates have stayed fairly steady for several years.
–January 2020 online casino games win: $53,254,379
–December 2019 online casino games win: $47,593,143
–January 2019 online casino games win: $31,711,501
—Month-on-month: 11.9% increase
—Year-on-year: 67.9% increase
Total Internet Gaming Win for January 2020
Another impressive number for the internet gaming sector set a record…again. It sets a high bar for the new year, but it seems like one that internet gaming will be happy to exceed
–January 2020 total internet gaming win: $55,086,590
–December 2019 total internet gaming win: $49,327,957
–January 2019 total internet gaming win: $33,594,391

—Year-on-year: 64% increase
Other Gaming Gets Solid 2020 Start
Sports betting seems to have found its footing in the last few months of 2019 and through January 2020, even hitting a growth spurt last month.
Of course, the sports season had something to do with it, as January was a huge betting month for major league football leading up to the Super Bowl. In general, however, the sector seems to be on a solid rise.
–January 2020 sports betting win: $53,561,626
–December 2019 sports betting win: $29,424,884
–January 2019 sports betting win: $18,777,582
—Month-on-month: 82% decrease
—Year-on-year: 185.2% increase
Land-based gambling had a solid month to kick off 2020, too. After some struggle-ridden years, the growth percentages are welcomed and positive. The monthly decrease is to be expected for the time of year but shouldn’t be a predictor going forward.
January’s increase came mostly from slot machine revenue, which was up 11.3% on its own, with table game revenue only up 1.1%.
–January 2020 casino win: $192,060,322
–December 2019 casino win: $208,553,276
–January 2019 casino win: $177,275,998
–Month-on-month: 7.9% decrease
–Year-on-year: 8.3% increase
