37,000 Cases of Cross-Border Gambling Shut Down by China in 2022
Authorities have been able to track down vast networks of illegal gambling organizations and intervene in cases involving illegal betting. A total of 2,600 online gambling platforms have already been targeted and shut down. More than 1,100 casinos have also been halted.
China has been working to curb the reach of gambling operations that target mainlanders or drive cash towards offshore locations. Authorities have dealt with more than 2,500 payment platforms that worked as underground banks and facilitated payments to the aforementioned gambling platforms. 1,200 tech support teams and 1.600 platforms promoting gambling were also shut down by the authorities. China has put its charm offensive abroad, reaching out to Cambodia and the Philippines to shut their illegal gambling sectors.
China discourages people from traveling abroad for the purposes of gambling. Macau is the only place where Chinese can gamble and where gambling is licensed. Macaese are seeking from concessionaires to bring in overseas gamblers and avoid taking money from Chinese gambers.
