$1 billion Powerball jackpot marks fifth largest prize in lottery history
GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A billion dollar Powerball jackpot is up for grabs Monday night, after three months without a big winner. Monday's jackpot prize marks the largest jackpot so far for 2024, with an estimated cash value of nearly $484 million.
At the Montrose Mini Mart on Vienna Road, customers are feeling the Powerball frenzy. Miranda Goddard, a cashier at the convenience store, says many people buy tickets when it's a big jackpot like this $1 billion one.
"Today, we've seen a lot of excited people come in. A lot of people want to get at least one ticket or up to 10 tickets each," she explained. And for whoever wins she has heard retirement is the talk or, "They can help a lot of people at the same time, whoever does get it, they are going to be set for a long time."
A Powerball jackpot of $842 million was last won on New Year's Day; The ticket was sold at Food Castle in Grand Blanc Township.
Monday night's billion dollar drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. You can buy tickets at retailers and online until 9:45 p.m.
