US Supreme Court Sides With Texas Tribe in Bingo Row
Tigua tribe has come out on the right side of a Supreme Court ruling over its offering of electronic bingo.
US Supreme Court sides with Texas tribe in Bingo Row. Tigua tribe is able to offer electronic bingo games at its casino in Lower Valley. The case will be re-examined in the lower courts. There has been a legal battle between the tribe and the state of Texas regarding gambling laws for decades.
The US Supreme Court ruled that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals did not understand the 1987 Restoration Act. The Act only prohibits banned gaming activities on tribal land in Texas. Following a court ruling in 2016, the Tiguas tribe switched its offering at the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center to bingo games.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Tiguas electronic bingo machines are not similar to slot machines. Chief Justice John Roberts voted against the case. Texas is one of the most restrictive US states when it comes to gambling. The state lottery is the main form of legal gambling in the state.
