Tropicana's possible implosion stirs memories of Las Vegas' explosive casino history

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The countdown is underway until the Tropicana Hotel closes its doors.
While the idea of imploding it is still being considered, News 3 looks back at some of the most notable casino “booms” in Las Vegas history.
More than a dozen casinos have suffered an explosive end. Most recently, the Riviera was imploded in 2016. The vacant land was purchased by a developer from the LVCVA in 2023 for $125M.
The first casino implosion was The Dunes Hotel the made way for the Bellagio in 1993. Two years later, the iconic Landmark Hotel, featured in Tim Burton’s Mars Attack Film was blown up in 1995.
In 2001, the Desert Inn was destroyed, and in moves Steve Wynn and his Wynn Resort and Casino.
2007 marks the end of the iconic Stardust casino. Its sign currently sits in the boneyard at the Neon Museum.
The owners of the Tropicana recently said to the state’s gaming control board, that they are weighing out their options to implode the resort.
Environmental factors are being considered.
