The Future For The Online Gambling Market in Canada
Bill C-218 to legalise single event sports betting in Canada received Royal Assent this week. It paves the way for a dramatic change in the gambling industry in that country. The future of sports gambling in this country is state-by-state. The provinces will decide how to operate the market. PlayNow in British Colombia and the OLG in Ontario are already offering sports bets.
Ontario is planning to introduce a new gambling market in late 2021. It is expected that private companies will provide sports betting and casino games. The government-owned Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation will operate alongside new betting firms. The future is for the OLG to exist alongside the new private betting companies. Single event sports bets will be added to the website of the corporation as soon as it is legal.
Ontario is leading the discussion paper on the development of a new gambling market. In British Colombia Lottery Corporation plans to implement new betting markets on its PlayNow website as soon as they legally can. The same is likely to happen in Alberta where the government-run PlayAlberta website is set to add betting Markets later this year. Land-based venues may offer the opportunity for single event sports betting at a later date.
Bill C-218 has been signed into law. Private operators running casino games will be able to take bets from punters there legally for the first time.
