Study: New Jersey Locals Do Not Want Casino Expansion
New Jersey residents do not want local casinos to expand outside Atlantic City. The study was conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University.
There are nine casinos in New Jersey, all located in Atlantic City. They have posted combined revenues of $2.13bn year-to-date. Online gambling operations were legalized in 2013. The latest attempt at expansion failed to garner the necessary support. The current constitution restricts casinos to Atlantic city. Both the General Assembly and Senate can propose amendments. If a proposition receives the needed legislative support, it will go before the voters.
50-54% of New Jersey locals do not want casino expansion. Sports betting has little influence on voters. Legislators are still debating the issue of smoking inside casinos. A New York judge recently struck down a law that had given casinos millions of dollars in tax breaks. The law was not valid. Survey asked respondents about their feelings about smoking in casinos and they supported current rules that allow it in designated areas.
