Slot machines and bingo hall is proposed in Southend
AN “adult gaming centre” including slot machines and a bingo hall could open in Southend town centre after plans were submit to convert part of an empty unit.
Company Merkur Slots UK has submitted a planning application to Southend Council to overhaul the ground floor of 13-15 London Road, close to Southend High Street.
The Merkur Casino group operates over 200 centres under the Merkur Slots and Merkur Cashino brands, including three family entertainment centres and three bingo clubs.
A Merkur spokesperson is hoping the application is successful so that the company can “play a role in the community”.
They said: “If our planning application is successful, we are looking forward to returning a vacant unit back to commercial use, ensuring it once again contributes to the local economy.
“The venue will create new jobs and represents much-needed high street investment at a challenging time.
“Our Merkur Slots are where people come to enjoy a game of bingo and their favourite pastime, and we look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
The unit, which is part of a three-storey detached building, was previously used by the Royal Bank of Scotland with separate offices above.
The bank closed 2 years ago, and the ground floor has been unoccupied since.
Prior to this application, approval has recently been granted for two further flats on the remainder of the ground floor.
Ian Gilbert, leader of the council, said filling empty shops is good but worries about the levels of gambling involved.
He said: “It is always good to see empty units being put back into use.
“I’m not sure what the levels of gambling that is involved though, as long as it is not licensed slot machines or fixed betting terminals, as I think is a bit of a problem from a gambling point of view.
“As long as there is the element of family fun, I am sure it will be a great thing for the area.”
