Rolling the dice on casino plans
The Shinnecock Indian Nation wants to build a casino on its land. The neighbors of the reservation oppose it. Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing to grant three downstate commercial casino licenses. The tribe's members live on the Hamptons reservation. They argue they deserve a full-scale casino license.
There are already four new Las Vegas-style casinos upstate, nine slot parlors, and mobile sports betting. The state is looking for a license for two new casinos. It will be given to Genting’s Resorts World at Aqueduct Racetrack and MGM”s Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway. State Sen. Joseph Addabbo chairs the Senate gaming committee and wants a full casino at aqueduction. Assemblyman Gary Pretlow chairs gaming panel and he wants one at yonkers.
The Shinnecocks want to build a full Class III Indian casino on their reservation. They have talked to Suffolk OTB about one of the three commercial licenses. The tribe has cooperative relationships with Seminoles, Hard Rock Hotel and Casinos and developer Tri-State Partners. The board members of The Times have reasoned opinions based on facts. It's important to encourage informed debate about the issues facing the community. If the Shinnecks want their full casino, they will have to fight for themselves and others will also have the fight to help them.
