A new gambling arcade is set to open on Broadway after planning permission was granted.

The arcade, located on the ground floor of 16 Broadway, was formerly a Salvation Army charity shop.

According the plans approved by the city council, the centre will include slot machine games and bingo. The proposed opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 8am to midnight.

The applicant, Chongie Entertainment Ltd, claimed the arcade would "create more linked trips which will benefit surrounding uses and the wider economy" and "broaden the range of facilities and strengthen the offer of Peterborough’s City Centre, thereby enhancing its vitality and viability".

It will create up to eight jobs, it added.

The application received no objection from either the Highways Authority or the police.

In a statement a police representative said: “I have viewed the documents in relation to crime, disorder and the fear of crime and reviewed police crimes and incidents for two similar sites in Peterborough.

"These are in areas that constantly attract crime and antisocial behaviour but there is no evidence that these premises contribute to, or cause any issues.

“I note the relevant management practices and have no further comment or objection and support the application."

It is the second gaming shop to be approved on Broadway this year.

Earlier in February, Cashino Gaming Ltd was given the go-ahead to operate at a vacant unit on Four Broadway.

There is also a gambling arcade located at 22-24 Broadway. A new development at 282 Lincoln Road was also given the green light in August.
