Ontario on Canadian acid test for online gambling
Bill C-218 is a bill that would legalize sports betting in Canada. Ontario launched igaming talks in April last year. The aim is to lay the groundwork for Canada's first online gambling framework. Canada had previously witnessed the transition to online gaming in the 90's. It was a success for the sector, but the incumbents were disappointed by Canadian criminal law. They left the country. Canada was not able to reverse the brain drain. There is an opportunity for it. In 1996/97, when online betting began to explode, Canada didn't have the regulatory infrastructure to support the early industry.
Industry experts spoke on a regulatory track hosted by IGT Play Sports at SBC Digital North America, June 9-10, 2021. Paul Burns, President of the Canadian Gambling Association (CGA), advised policy makers to focus on the public health first approach. Stan Cho, who completed the panel process, thinks the December launch is feasible. He can't predict the date yet. He is talking from a building made of oak in Canada. The panel is held at I GT Play sports at Sbc Digital. North American, on June 10-11, 2020.
